1974 BMW 2002

People never tire of admiring the clean lines and brilliant execution of this timeless design from BMW. Based on its VIN # 4220074, this was the 74th automobile manufactured in BMW's new Mod 74 body style, for the 1974 model year of the Neue Klasse model (see also wikipedia) more commonly known as the BMW '02 Series. I surmise it was built during the first month of production, September of 1973. Although 77639 BMW 2002s were built in all, this 74th 1974 is a distinguished item. Only 1328 of these vehicles were built before the turn of the calendar year.

The car starts every time, and runs well. It has ORIGINAL factory paint, rubbed down to bare metal in certain places. Its colors are Jade Green and tan leather. It comes with 20 years of maintenance records intact. It is a prime candidate for restoration. There's minimal rust, although some is found in the front fascia, door panels, the bottom of the front fender, and the centerline of the roof.

All of the interior wants attention. Headliner and rear seat cover are shredded. Front seats are in better shape but their leather is visibly aged and stained. Driver's seat is missing the knob used to adjust its angle of recline. Turn signal and wiper stalks were abused at some point, nonfunctional but still connected with the steering column. Speedometer needle is broken. Temp and fuel gauges are erratic.

Gear shift lever is operable but wants new rubber bushings to restore accurate movement. Motor mounts are similarly worn with age. Vibration can be felt and heard under power in first gear. The car has its original factory 4-speed manual transmission. Synchronizers for second gear are less effective than other gears, due to age and wear. Otherwise the powertrain feels smooth.

With minor updates, this car could be a fresh and reliable daily driver. With more substantial investment and attention, you could make this car a show winner. Performance is eager and worry-free. Steering is accurate and handling is really quite impressive, giving credence to the 2002's legendary capabilities!
